Croft British Touring Car Racing, Event photography E4HRY7BJ8AYG

Earlier this year I headed over the Croft racing circuit North Yorkshire to photograph a round of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). It’s not too often that I get chance to photograph motorsport these days due to my workload with weddings and portraits and this was certainly my first visit back to see the BTCC for some years. I do relish the challenge of motorsport photography and trying to keep some of the action in a still photograph, it’s very easy to just ‘Stop’ the action and almost have the effect that the cars we not even moving. Race circuits pose an even bigger challenge than rallying because of the fencing and the distance than we are kept away for safety.
My camera choice for the day was my trusty 1D mk3, I have had this camera for 3 years now and it’s probably coming to the end of its life span with the workload it’s had put on it, but at 10 frames per second, the camera is in its element at a motorsport event. Plus with the wet weather on the day is good to be able to use equipment that is resistant to the great British climate.
In the racing, Matt Neal took the first victory of the day in the Honda Civic, he also won race 2 by just 0.055s over a charging Mat Jackson which was the closest finish of the year. Jackson went on to take his third win of the season for Airwaves Racing. WSR BMW's Robert Collard finishes on the winners' rostrum in all three races and his rookie team-mate Nick Foster takes his first BTCC podium with second place in race 3.
Below is a selection of my favourite images from the day’s action.
