Gilpin Lake House, private, intimate and very Lake District
Gilpin Lake House is part of the wider Gilpin Hotel estate, but it has a very different feel to a large hotel wedding. It is private, quiet and beautifully suited to intimate celebrations where the day feels like a proper house-party with very good food and considerably better scenery than most house parties.
The Lake House is set in its own private grounds, with lake views, woodland, gardens and a slower pace that works brilliantly for couples who want something personal rather than enormous.
For photography, this is a venue where subtlety matters. The setting is elegant rather than shouty, so I’d keep the coverage calm, natural and lightly guided, with portraits that feel connected to the place without turning the day into a magazine shoot.
Why Gilpin Lake House works so well for weddings
Some venues are designed for big movement and big guest lists. Gilpin Lake House is more about privacy, intimacy and giving the whole day a calm sense of occasion.
Private lake setting
The lake, gardens and woodland create a peaceful backdrop without needing to leave the venue.
Intimate wedding feel
It suits smaller celebrations where guests can properly connect rather than just wave at each other across a ballroom.
Elegant interiors
The indoor spaces offer atmosphere, comfort and a strong backup plan if the weather gets dramatic.
Why Gilpin Lake House photographs so well
Gilpin Lake House photographs well because everything feels close, private and considered. You have lake, garden, woodland and interiors all working together, rather than a venue where the best photo spot is a car journey away.
My approach here would be quiet and unobtrusive for most of the day: real moments, natural reactions and the atmosphere of people being together somewhere special. For portraits, I’d keep things simple, gently guided and never too far from the main flow of the day.
If you’re still working out what sort of photography approach suits you, my guide to choosing the right wedding photographer may help you think through style, experience and whether you want a calm documentary approach or something more posed.

Portraits without disappearing for ages
For a private venue like Gilpin Lake House, portraits work best in short, quiet pockets. A few minutes by the lake, a little garden walk, then back to your guests before anyone thinks I’ve led you into the woods permanently.
A sensible rain plan
The interiors give lovely wet-weather options, and the private grounds mean we can nip outside quickly if the weather opens up. Lake District rain is annoying, yes, but it does occasionally make itself useful.

The rowing boat is a bit special
One of the lovely things about Gilpin Lake House is that the lake feels properly part of the venue, not just a pretty thing in the distance. When the timings, weather and light all cooperate, the rowing boat can make portraits feel very personal to the place.
It is not something I’d force into the day, because nobody needs a rowing-based incident in their wedding timeline. But when the lake is calm and everyone is up for it, it can be brilliant.
Planning a Gilpin Lake House wedding
A little help if you’re planning your day here
Gilpin Lake House works best when the plan keeps the day intimate, calm and unhurried. The setting is already doing a lot, so there’s no need to overfill the timeline.
Timings that feel calm
A sensible flow keeps the day relaxed without turning it into a military operation with canapés.

Hi, I’m Chris
A little about me and how I work
I’m based in Cockermouth and photograph weddings across the Lake District and Cumbria. I’m drawn to honest, natural moments and work in a calm, unhurried way, offering gentle direction when it’s helpful.
Gilpin Lake House suits that approach beautifully: private, elegant and full of the sort of quiet, meaningful moments that are far better than anything I could stage.

Location and directions
Gilpin Lake House is close to Windermere in the South Lakes. Always check travel timings close to the day, especially in peak Lake District season. Scenic roads are lovely, but they do sometimes operate on “sheep plus campervan” time.
