Holesfoot Wedding Photography

A secluded Eden Valley wedding venue with private gardens, woodland, meadow, barn spaces, manor house atmosphere and proper weekend-wedding energy.

Holesfoot, a wedding venue with a very clear sense of place

Holesfoot sits in the Eden Valley, tucked away in private grounds with that lovely feeling of having escaped normal life for a couple of days. It is not trying to be a wedding conveyor belt, which is always a good start.

The venue describes itself as a secluded Lake District and Cumbria wedding venue with exclusive use, on-site accommodation and 20 acres of gardens, woodland and meadow. For couples, that means the day can feel less like a single event and more like a proper shared weekend with your favourite people.

For photography, Holesfoot gives you variety without needing to drag everyone off-site: barn texture, manor house character, pond-side portraits, walled garden corners, woodland and open meadow. Basically, plenty of options without needing hiking boots unless you really fancy them.

Why Holesfoot works so well for weddings

A good wedding venue is not just about how it looks. It is about how the day feels, how easily people move around, and whether the plan gives you space to enjoy yourselves.

Weekend wedding feel

Exclusive use and on-site accommodation help the wedding feel like a full gathering rather than a rushed few hours.

Loads of ceremony options

The Barn, Italian Garden Terrace, Walled Garden Canopy, Pond Jetty and Long Room all give the day different shapes.

Private grounds

Gardens, woodland, pond and meadow keep portraits close by, relaxed and varied.

Why Holesfoot photographs so well

The strongest wedding photographs usually come from a mix of setting, light and people being fully in the day. Holesfoot gives plenty of setting, so the important bit is not overworking it.

My approach is mostly documentary: real moments, natural reactions and the atmosphere of the day. For portraits, I keep things gently guided and quick enough that you do not feel as if you’ve accidentally booked a modelling workshop with a buffet afterwards.

If you’re still working out what sort of photography approach suits you, my guide to choosing the right wedding photographer may help you think through style, experience and whether you want a calm documentary approach or something more posed.

Photo options

  • Pond jetty portraits
  • Walled garden and Italian garden ceremony areas
  • Barn texture and warm indoor atmosphere
  • Manor house interiors
  • Woodland and meadow walks
  • Evening outdoor atmosphere if the weather behaves

Portraits without disappearing for ages

I’d usually use one short portrait window and, if the weather and light behave, another later on. We get the setting without kidnapping you from your own wedding.

A sensible rain plan

Cumbria does occasionally throw weather at weddings like it has been personally offended. We use indoor options first, then step outside quickly when the weather gives us a gap.

Planning a Holesfoot wedding

A little help if you’re planning your day here

The best plan usually keeps portraits simple, group photos tidy and the day loose enough for real moments to happen naturally.

If you feel camera shy

You do not need to perform for the camera. Natural, comfortable and quietly guided is the aim.

How I photograph weddings

Mostly documentary, with calm guidance when helpful. No turning the day into a styled shoot disguised as a wedding.

See my photography style

Holesfoot is made for relaxed storytelling: a bit of estate atmosphere, a bit of countryside, and plenty of space for people to properly settle into the day.

Chris Freer, Lake District wedding photographer
Calm, unobtrusive wedding photography across Cumbria and the Lake District.

Hi, I’m Chris

A little about me and how I work

I’m based in Cockermouth and photograph weddings across the Lake District and Cumbria. I’m drawn to honest, natural moments and work in a calm, unhurried way, offering gentle direction when it’s helpful.

Holesfoot suits that approach beautifully: relaxed, characterful and full of the sort of little in-between moments that are far better than anything I could stage.

Location and directions

Holesfoot is based at Eden Valley, between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Always check travel timings close to the day, especially in peak Lake District season. Scenic roads are lovely, but they do sometimes operate on “sheep plus campervan” time.

Holesfoot wedding photography FAQ

Is Holesfoot good for a full wedding weekend?

Yes. Holesfoot is especially strong for couples who want a relaxed multi-day celebration with accommodation and exclusive use rather than a single-day rush.

Where are the best photo spots at Holesfoot?

The pond jetty, gardens, woodland, barn, manor house and meadow all work well. I’d keep portraits close, quick and varied so you are not away from guests for ages.

Does Holesfoot work if the weather is mixed?

Yes. The barn and manor house give strong indoor options, then we can nip outside when the rain eases. Very Lake District, but with a roof nearby.

How long do couple portraits usually take?

Usually 10 to 20 minutes is enough for a strong set, with a second short wander later if the light turns lovely.

Can you help with family group photos?

Yes. I keep group photos calm, friendly and efficient. A tidy list helps massively.

How do we book you for Holesfoot?
