Low Hall The Lakes, rustic barn weddings tucked between Lorton and Cockermouth
Low Hall The Lakes is one of those venues that feels like you have found it rather than simply arrived at it. Down a quiet lane, surrounded by gardens, woodland, a brook and the Lorton Fells, it has a wonderfully tucked-away feel without being miles from civilisation. Cockermouth is just down the road, Lorton is on the doorstep, and I’m about two miles away — which is very useful if anyone suddenly needs a photographer who knows which way the weather is coming from.
The venue combines the 17th-century Low Hall farmhouse with the Lovable Old Barn, gardens, quirky corners, exposed stone, beams, soft barn light and plenty of outdoor space. It does not feel like a shiny hotel or a polished, same-as-everywhere barn. It feels more personal than that: colourful if you want colourful, relaxed if you want relaxed, full party if you want full party, and still quiet enough for a breather when the social battery starts flashing at 12%.
From a photography point of view, Low Hall is brilliant because the best bits are close together. The gardens, barn, farmhouse, woodland, pond, lane and fell views all give variety without dragging you away from your guests for ages. That matters. You get the setting, the atmosphere and the portraits, but the wedding still feels like a wedding rather than an elaborate countryside photoshoot with a buffet attached.
Why Low Hall The Lakes works so well for weddings
Low Hall has that rare mix of being full of character but still feeling easy. Guests can explore the gardens, gather around the barn, duck into quieter spaces, or wander outside without the day feeling scattered. It gives couples freedom to make the place feel like them, which is always better than trying to squeeze your personality into a beige wedding template. Nobody needs beige template energy on their wedding day.
A proper sense of place
Farmhouse, barn, gardens, woodland and fell views. It feels unmistakably Cumbrian.
It can be properly yours
Low Hall suits personal, colourful, relaxed weddings rather than carbon-copy days.
Easy flow for guests
Everything is close enough to feel relaxed, but varied enough to keep the day interesting.
Why Low Hall The Lakes photographs so well
Some venues give you one obvious photo spot. Low Hall gives you lots of small, useful, characterful ones. That makes a big difference because we can keep portraits short and natural, then send you back to your guests before anyone starts wondering if you’ve been kidnapped by a photographer with a Pinterest board.
The barn has texture and atmosphere, the farmhouse has warmth and history, and the gardens give you colour, movement and relaxed space. The lane, woodland, pond and wider Lorton Valley views add a proper Lake District feel without needing to bundle everyone into cars and vanish for half the drinks reception.
If you’re still choosing your photographer, my guide to choosing the right wedding photographer may help you think through style, experience and whether the approach feels like the right fit.

A very local Low Hall wedding photographer
I’m based just outside Cockermouth and only live about two miles from Low Hall, so this is one of those venues where I’m not pretending to know the area because I once walked past a Herdwick. I know the lanes, the light, the weather patterns, the nearby photo options and the general “how quickly can we nip outside before the rain remembers Cumbria exists?” rhythm.
That local knowledge is especially useful at a venue like Low Hall because the best plan is usually flexible. We can use the gardens when the light is soft, the barn when the weather is doing its theatrical thing, and the nearby landscape if there’s time and you fancy it. But the main aim is always the same: keep things calm, keep you with your guests, and make sure the photos feel like your day rather than a production.
Planning a Low Hall The Lakes wedding
A little help if you’re planning your day here
Low Hall is a venue where you can make the day feel very much like you. That freedom is brilliant, but a calm plan still helps. Not a clipboard-and-whistle plan. More of a “let’s make sure everyone knows roughly what’s happening so nobody accidentally starts speeches while the best man is in a field” plan.
Timings that feel calm
The venue has a relaxed flow, so the timings can breathe without becoming vague chaos in nice shoes.

Hi, I’m Chris
A little about me and how I work
I’m based just outside Cockermouth and photograph weddings across the Lake District. Low Hall The Lakes is almost comically local for me, which means I know the venue, the lanes, the light and the nearby landscape very well.
My approach is mostly documentary: real moments, calm coverage, gentle direction when it helps, and portraits that don’t take you away from the people you invited.

Location
Low Hall The Lakes, near Lorton and Cockermouth
Low Hall The Lakes sits in the north-western Lake District, close to Lorton, Cockermouth, Loweswater, Crummock Water and Buttermere. It feels tucked away, but it’s still practical for guests travelling from west Cumbria, Keswick, the A66 and the wider Lake District.
For couples, that means you get the private, rural venue feeling without making the day difficult. For me, it means I can use local knowledge if the weather, light or timings need a quick rethink. Which, in Cumbria, is not exactly a rare skill.
